THE i PHONE

I just saw a detailed review of the Iphone and something started to bug me. What was troubling me? I'm glad you asked. Well with all the service charges stacking up, the $100 at&t plan, having to send it in to apple to recharge the battery(probably a fee), the $30 service charge fee of turning it on, and who knows what other hidden charges, i got the feeling that this was excessive. SURE it's a nifty little media device, little more you could add onto it, maybe videogames. It also has GPS, yah, you can find out where you are at any time, a constant road map in your palm, that's almost as good as a swiss army pocket knife. The problem i saw was that the features costing people hundreds of dollars are basically for phone and internet, two things that i believe (in my perfect world) should be free.

Phone service is one of those things that is basic, if someone needs help that's your goto service. I think it would be great if people could live without having their pockets squeezed for basic needs. Certain things tied to keeping you alive and well should be free of cost, things like health care, clean water, electricity, gas, the internet. Wouldn't it be great if those type things were available to everyone and running simply for the benefit of mankind instead of profit.

I'm reminded of the time when i thought i had a small heart attack. I went to the hospital, they ran 3 tests, i talked to two people, they charged me $1200. They didn't do a thing to me, she told me i was perfectly healthy. The cause was narrowed down to a panic/anxiety attack, too stressed out. But what the hell, do EKG tests run on $400 paper? $1200 for someone to tell me i'm healthy... it's expensive just to look at people.

Anyway, i think the I-Phone is a neat gadget, even though i don't want one... I personally don't enjoy talking on the phone, never have...

$1400 that is excessive. As a UK resident I take our free healthcare as the norm. Upon reading your experience i feel extremely privaleged to live here.

ps thank goodness you are healthy.

It's sad really, i envy the folks in the UK, Canada, France, and elsewhere that have universal healthcare. In America getting hurt is like playing Monopoly, land on the wrong square and they'll take all your money. It would help so many people if we had that system, it's just the right thing to do...

I'm not totally healthy, wish i were, but i'm still dealing with a back injury from lifting. At the time it sounded like my spine cracked in several places... not sure exactly what's wrong. Now the problem is that i can't lay flat on it or my lower back hurts til the point where i can't walk. I'm reluctant in getting it looked at because they'll probably put me in traction and pick my pocket while i can't move... or put me upside down and catch all the change as it falls out of my pockets.

I'm against universal health care and believe in the free market (we don't have one, so that's what I blame our high cost of living on), but I totally get what you're saying about this shit being too expensive. It doesn't help when Apple can sneeze and people line up to buy the boogers at $1000 a pop. I'm left wondering where their priorities are.

Then again, maybe people aren't as stupid as all that and Apple knows their customer base is much smaller than the media makes it look, so the high price helps recoup their costs.

And the cost of health care, yikes. My dog bit my hand last ear: $600. All the doctor did was wash out the bite, dress it, and give me a tetnus shot. Basic First Aid. I managed the healing process over the course of a month.

Medicine need the law equivalents of paralegals. Or better yet, no licensing program so doctors don't have to go in debt getting their education. And no income taxes so we have an additional 20-50% of our income to cover these costs without having to worry about inflation.

But I doubt either of us wants to get into that here so yeah, iPhones and Doctors...too damn expensive :)

That's a crazy amount for a simple dressing. I like the idea of universal coverage just so no one falls through the cracks... there's always bound to be a company trying to cheat people and letting them die.

The $600 tag on the i-phone, it's expensive but i understand it, it's a newer take on an old idea and done well enough to deserve the price possibly. I just know that what's keeping a large selection of people from buying it is justifying paying an extra $80 for phone service each month.

I just think it's wrong, the number of ways companies are finding to reach into our pockets. You'd think some of these innovations would be like the television or radio. Once you pay for the gadget that should be it... they're all mobsters.

I completely feel ya on this one Mike. Sicko's coming out soon, but I saw a recent interview with Moore talking about Hilary Clinton who once supported Universal Healthcare now receives huge sums of money from hmo's and no longer talks about universal healthcare. What a world.

Hey Mike,
I feel the same way. Sorry about your back. How did it happen?
Hey I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but I would really like to see how you break down the body. Could you maybe break down the body into the simple shapes you see them as? Both male and female. I learn so much from that. I would love to see you do like a youtube video of you drawing a character. Have you seen Stephen Silver's new post? He has a cool youtube video of him drawing. Look here

Anyway I appreciate every drawing of yours I get to see.
Cheers.

Yeah, I agree. It breaks my heart when I see people that don't have access to some basic necessities.

I think there are other solutions to that problem, but I agree with your overall sentiment.

I was on Hilary's side, still am for the most part, seems like she's being tempted by the dark side. Grant, i remember seeing that during the last debate, the words affordable plan jumped out of her mouth and it made me do a double take at the screen. I'm for whoever is willing to make the smart changes that are necessary, wish Gore was running.

Hey steph, i got it from lifting with the back instead of the legs. I was giving my dog a bath, an overweight german shepherd/husky mix, as soon as i picked him up i heard my lower spine crack in about 5 places. The injury wasn't always so bad but a few jobs since then have aggravated it to the point where i can't lift anything heavy, unless i want to kiss the floor. I haven't forgotten about the outline, seem to get sidetracked, hard to believe i only posted twice in june, i'm on it. Thanks though :)

BTW Sicko was awesome, hope it changes a lot of minds on the subject.
